5 Tips to Help You Memorise the Qur’an

There are great benefits to memorising the Holy Qur’an, and we should all make an effort to do so. The Qur’an is such an amazing book – not only do we receive rewards just for reciting it, but we also receive rewards for listening to it and memorising it! There are millions of Muslims who have memorised the Qur’an all across the world, and it is not impossible for you to do the same. Below are 5 practical tips to help you memorise the Holy Book:

  1. Intention: As Muslims, we believe that everything begins with an intention. After all, our Prophet Muhammad PBUH taught us: ‘Actions are judged by their intentions’ (Al-Bukhari). When it comes to a great act of worship such as memorising the Qur’an, it is even more important to reassess our intention. Are we doing it to receive the title of a ‘Hafidh’ or ‘Hafidha’? Are we doing it so people can be amazed by our achievement? Or are we doing it purely for the sake of Allah? If our intention is to please our Lord and connect with the Qur’an, then we can definitely begin this journey in the best possible way.
  2. Time: When it comes to memorisation, it’s all about the time you pick to memorise. If, for example, you try to memorise the Qur’an after a long day of school or work in the evening, it will be really difficult for you as your brain and body would already be exhausted. However, if you picked the early morning time, you will feel fresh and ready to absorb new knowledge. Not only this, but our Prophet PBUH made du’a for Allah to bless the early morning time! Try to memorise the Qur’an after Fajr and you will see how much easier it will be.
  3. Consistency: The biggest obstacle to achieving anything in life is the lack of consistency behind it. The same applies to memorising the Qur’an! If you try to memorise the Qur’an once or twice a week, the results will be minimal. If, however, you work at it every day, even if it’s just a verse or two, you will make a huge amount of progress. After all, the most beloved actions to Allah are the consistent ones even if they are small!
  4. Environment: It’s not enough to just memorise the Qur’an by yourself and then be exposed to different things in the world outside of that. You have to create an environment which is inspired and fuelled by the Qur’an. You should have friends who are interested in learning the Qur’an like you are. You should constantly be listening to different reciters of the Qur’an. You should be attending classes and lectures about the Qur’an. In other words, the Qur’an should become your primary focus and objective. When this happens, memorisation becomes easier and far more enjoyable!
  5. Revision: Now that you’ve begun the memorisation process, don’t forget to keep on revising what you’ve already memorised. It might not be easy to memorise the Qur’an but it’s extremely easy to forget it! The best thing you can have is a teacher or memorisation buddy who you can read to and hear feedback from. Always aim to strengthen your memorisation of the Qur’an by revising, whether it’s by looking inside, reading new chapters in your prayers, or reading it to a teacher.

I hope these tips help you to begin your journey of memorisation – whether that’s just one Surah or the entire Qur’an! May Allah make us from the People of the Qur’an, ameen.
